Commonly Asked Questions to Me

Everyone has “those” commonly questions about me, some of which are going to be silly and some not so much.

  1. Why do you have short hair?

There is really no reason of why I have short hair, or even sometimes my hair is extremely short. My hair is so thick, that it gets weighed down and I sweat so easily it’s just easier in my book that way.

  • What is Cowden’s Syndrome?

Cowden’s Syndrome (Disease) is a genetic disorder that causes cancerous growth to grow all throughout my body. The big things that get the doctors worried, and that I am in the clinic for follow ups on are Skin, Kidney, GI, Thyroid, Breast, and Gynecological cancers. This also is the reason why I have a large head (and no it’s not because I have a “big brain”). I also have a learning disability, and a cognitive disability.

Due to my Cowden’s my thyroid was the first to go, then my breasts, then a hysterectomy was done. My skin gets checked once a year, my kidney (at this point) I will not need to get checked to make sure nothing grows a tumors is at the age of 40. I also have had skin cancer once, so yes, I am a cancer survivor.

  • What is HS?

HS or hidradenitis suppurativa a skin condition that causes cyst to grow on my skin. Normally they are treated with antibiotics, because they can cause infection. For maintenance, they have put me on a biologic drug. But that can cause people with Cowden’s to grow more cancer, and in my case the biologic that they chose didn’t work for me.

  • Why I am I in school for Human Services?

I wanted to make a difference in the world that I live in. I know that there are so many ways that I could, but helping people was always something that I liked to do.

  • When you graduate, what do you hope to do?

When I enrolled into the program, I wanted to help people who were sexually assaulted (a.k.a being a Sexual Assault Advocate). Now, I am still not sure. However, the world is still wide open into “what” I want to do.  I was enrolled into a program during winter break of 2020, where I went to an intensive 6-day program where I learned a lot about the different aspects in mental health and substance abuse. This opened my eyes to what “else” I can do with my associates.

Another thing would be seeing my brother everytime he comes home (although at times he drives me crazy), it’s so much better than having him in a ICU bed fighting for his life.

  • What is my biggest regret?
